No one goes to Cuiabá, said my good friend Eduardo in Rio. Well, I did. I love to find an obscure town on the map, which also has a hotel with a pool. The trick is to be completely alone, do a bit of sightseeing (it’s important that the city doesn’t have too much to see), swim, eat great dinners and sleep. Cuiabá in Mato Grosso/Pantanal was new to me and the Deville Hotel looked promising. It turned out to be enough here to fill two days and well then. Next time I will bring the wildlife here, but not now. Instead, I ordered room service.
Picture above: The first evening I took an Uber down to the newly renovated row of houses by the river bank. This is the postcard photo that illustrates all tourist brochures. According to the websites about Cuiabá a place where there were many bars and folk life. But everything was closed and the only people I saw was a couple walking the dog. The street is mostly a backdrop without content. I stayed there for ten minutes. But nice for photography though.
Men fint for fotografering.
Here I am with a new acquaintance, Julio Cézar – a common name in these parts of the world.
This is one of the great churches, Catedral Basílica do Senhor Bom Jesus.

Cuiabá planned trams for the soccer World Cup, but only managed to create the foundations for the rail corridor. So here people are waiting for the bus.
Cuiabá planla trikk til fotball-VM, men klarte bare å lage fundamentet til skinnegangen. Så her venter folk på bussen.
Geodesic Center of South America. Some have found that the geographic center of South America is here. Thus one more attraction! The square was actually quite pleasant.
Centro Geodésico da América do Sul. Noen har funnet ut at Sør-Amerikas geografiske sentrum er her. Dermed en severdighet til!
After the emotional experience, and I was also a little hungry, I had to have a bucket of ice cream at Café Central. 8 reais for all the fun.
20 kroner for hele moroa.
A strange place, Caixa d’Água Velha, the old waterworks, has become a museum. I learned about Cuiabá’s history and saw pictures from a time before the city was vandalized by new buildings. This is also a great place to escape the heat outside.
Mercado Público, the old market. Today a rather well maintained place, with some cafés and very few people. Expect to walk a lot to get here, it is close to the river, in the middle of not so welcoming districts. The best transport in Cuiabá was Uber.
The ultimate tourist image. I had to go back to the riverside and Orla do Porto. It was only on my second visit that I discovered that they have only refurbished the facades, and that there is nothing behind them. Only a kind of terrace which is presumably intended for beer drinking…it was closed.
Here we are in the real city center, where people stay in large numbers during the day. This was in November and Black Friday is underway. For those who like cheap clothes and electronics, Cuiabá is an eldorado.
Cuiabá is perhaps best known as the town you pass through to get to the wildlife in the Pantanal, but the town has a large historic center with old, beautiful buildings. In addition, this is a place that buzzes with life during the day.
Unfortunately, Cuiabá has not taken good care of the city’s colonial architecture and the backlog is enormous. Here we have another example of a newly renovated facade without content.
Avenida Generoso Ponce was deafening. At first the stretches seemed endless, mostly because the pavements are extremely narrow and uncomfortable to walk on, secondly because of the violent and noisy car traffic. After a couple of hours I got used to the noise of the city.
An example of what one can do instead of going to a mediocre museum (very important that the city does not have too many museums). After a few rounds here, get some sleep. Deville in Cuiabá is the kind of hotel you literary can dive into – and stay there.
Etter noen runder her, sove litt. Deville in Cuiabá is the kind of hotel you literary can dive into – and stay there.

Praça Ipiranga is a meeting place for many, with a bus station nearby. When you walk around a lot like I do (apart from the laps in the pool at the hotel) this is a place you always come back to. But I never learned how the bus system worked.
The park at Praca da República was an oasis in an otherwise noisy city centre.
If you do not move far from the hotel in the evening, this is the familiar environment you will encounter in Cuiabá.
And then each day ends with a big dinner. Today meat, lots of meat. Brazilians always have to have rice, here it is mixed with sun-dried meat. Fried potatoes or French fries are considered vegetables here. In the glasses I had Brazilian red wine (which is good!) and a lot of water.
I dag kjøtt, mye kjøtt.
